You sometimes have to do legwork and watch for deals. It's not just "going online and buying the tickets," though. It's very last minute, but it's a great way to see the opera at low cost if you're in school. You'll get an email through the OPERAtunities system the day of if you can. You just have to go 90 minutes before the start of the opera with your student ID and have cash on hand, if the show isn't sold out.

If you're a student, if you follow the "Student OPERAtunities" you can get Student Rush tickets, which will cost you $15 for Dress Circle and $25 for Mezzanine/Orchestra Floor. They will also most likely do another free show in Feb or March at Jerryworld Cowboy Stadium AT&T Stadium, as they did the past two years (The Magic Flute and Turandot) and they were both very successful. They also do free showings- they used to be outside of the theater, but the most recent one was at Kyle Warren Park.

I managed to get three tickets in grand tier for Boris Godunov for $4.44 each from one of their quick sales, and I got my season tickets last year for $70 for all of the 2011/2012 operas in grand tier seating through another quick sale.

If you follow the Dallas Opera twitter or facebook, you can sometimes get opera tickets for anywhere between $5 and $50.
